The tomato from El Perelló continues to take steps towards the future
El tomate de El Perelló sigue dando pasos hacia el futuro

The Perelló tomato, one of the most emblematic agricultural products of the Valencian Community, faces a new challenge: adapting to a context marked by climate change and the need for more efficient water use. With this objective, the TomSostAcqua+ project was born, an initiative that promotes more sustainable and innovative agriculture without sacrificing the quality and flavor that characterize this highly valued product.

The project brings together various organizations committed to the future of the agricultural sector, including the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), AIMPLAS, the Valencian Community's Agri-food Cooperatives, and UNIPRO. Together, they are working on the research and development of new irrigation techniques and advanced technologies to reduce water consumption in tomato cultivation.

Among the solutions being tested are soil moisture sensors, capable of accurately measuring the plant's actual water needs, and the use of solid water, an innovative technology that helps retain moisture in the soil for longer. These tools allow for optimized irrigation, reduced waste, and improved efficiency in the use of natural resources.

In addition to reducing water consumption, the project aims to maintain and even improve the quality of Valencian tomatoes, ensuring they retain their organoleptic properties, texture, and flavor. This is all key to guaranteeing the competitiveness of farmers and responding to new sustainability demands from both the market and society.

TomSostAcqua+ also has a significant environmental dimension. Tomato cultivation in the area surrounding the Albufera Natural Park requires a balance between agricultural activity and ecosystem conservation. Therefore, the project promotes environmentally friendly practices and more sustainable production models that contribute to protecting this unique natural space.

With initiatives like this, the Valencian agricultural sector demonstrates its capacity to innovate and evolve towards a more responsible, efficient, and sustainable future. The Perelló tomato not only keeps a historic agricultural tradition alive, but also serves as an example of how innovation can help address the challenges of the present and the future.
